In this class, students
- work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- learn about borrowing and carrying numbers.
- study place value, and rounding.
- learn basic math vocabulary.
- study some math-related topics like money, time and calendars.
ELL Math A
Prerequisite: Successfully complete a math placement test. The test includes three-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems.
Students will learn
- basic computation.
- how to read clocks, schedules, and fares.
- basic measurement.
- how to count and convert money from dollars to cents.
- how to calculate simple rates such as gas mileage.
- understanding weights and volume.
- wage information such as taxes paid.
ELL Math B-1, B-2
Prerequisite: ELL Math A, a score of 204 on CASAS Math Level A Forms 31-32, or teacher recommendation.
In ELL Math B1, students learn the basics of the topics listed below. In ELL Math B2, students learn more about the topics. In these classes, students learn how to:
- use calendars and clocks.
- understand pay stubs and tax forms.
- understand banking procedures and use a check register.
- determine best prices on products.
- plan transportation using schedules and fare information.
- read menus.
- calculate costs and mileage and gasoline consumption using rates.
- understand medication labels.
- recognize standard measures.
- identify product containers.
- calculate length, perimeter, area, volume, and height or weight.
ELL Math C
Prerequisite: ELL Math B-1, B-2, a CASAS Math score of 221 on the Level B Forms 33, 34, or teacher recommendation.
This course is for ELL students who want to move into academic (non-ELL) math courses.
Students will
- review basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) with whole numbers and money.
- review fractions, decimals and percents.
- learn how to read word problems.
ELL Math Lab
Prerequisite: ELL student
ELL students will work independently in a self-paced mode on math skills.
Academic Math Sequence
Accuplacer Math
Prerequisite: high school diploma, GED, or diploma from another country, recognized by the college admissions office.
This class is for students who have taken the Accuplacer test and need to improve the math skills needed to get into introductory college math courses. These skills include understanding basic algebra and geometry. Students needing more basic instruction in fractions, decimals, etc. will be directed to the appropriate courses.
Algebra A, B, C
Prerequisite: completion of Math 3 or teacher recommendation
This course introduces the mathematical language of algebra. Learners will set up, write and solve a variety of problems using variables, exponents, inequalities, graphs, tables, and functions. Problem solving strategies will be stressed.
Algebra A introduces integers, simplifying expressions, solving equations, and graphing linear equations.
Algebra B continues with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing polynomials, factoring polynomial, graphing linear equations and determining slope and intercept.
Algebra C includes solving word problems using distance and cost formulas, radicals, functions, and quadratic equations.
GED Math
Prerequisites: GED student, TABE 8.0+
Students working on the GED will get brush-up instruction in this course. Students needing more basic instruction in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, or geometry will be directed to the appropriate courses.
Geometry
Prerequisite: completion of Math 3 or teacher recommendation
Students will learn to use and apply English and metric measurements to real-life problems. Learners will learn how to compute perimeter, area, and volume of various figures. They will begin to learn about various angles and how to measure them. Also, students will study triangles and their use in problem solving, especially in the workplace.
Math 1
Prerequisite: ASE learners (Reading CASAS 221-236) or native English speakers needing in depth review of fundamental arithmetic and word problems.
Students will learn
- basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) involving whole numbers and decimals
- place value, estimation, and measurement
- how to use calculators
- how to apply these skills to practical problems.
Math 2
Prerequisites: completion of Math 1 or teacher recommendation, CASAS 221+
Students will
- learn how to solve problems that have fractions, decimals, and measurements.
- use these skills to solve consumer-related problems.
Math 3
Prerequisite: completion of Math 2 or teacher recommendation
Students will
- work with percents, ratios and proportions
- learn about integers, the coordinate system and data analysis.
Math Lab
Prerequisite: ASE student
ASE students will work independently in a self-paced mode on math skills.
Statistics and Probability
Prerequisite: completion of Math 3 or teacher recommendation.
In this class, students will learn the language of statistics and learn to represent data using tables, charts and graphs. They will learn to select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data, and develop and evaluate inferences and predictions based on data. They will also work toward understanding and applying the basic concept of probability.
