Hubbs Center Computer Use Policy

Self-Paced Courses:

Keyboarding

This beginning course uses self-paced computer software to teach basic typing skills.  It introduces proper fingering as well as other techniques (posture, etc.) so that the learner will be able to key (type) information without looking at the keys.

Online Learning 

Various self-paced computer-related learning activities are available, depending on the student's needs. Programs available include Rosetta Stone, English for All, Lifetime Library, Plato, and ICDL.

Instructor-Led Courses:

Introduction to Computers and Windows  (Class Home Page)

  • Prerequisite:  Keyboarding, CASAS 210+

In this introductory class, students learn to use computers and the Microsoft Windows operating system.  They will learn the basics of word processing, windows, and file management and have an opportunity to use some peripheral devices, such as a microphone and a scanner.

Introduction to Word Processing  (Class Home Page)

  • Prerequisite:  Keyboarding, CASAS 210+

Students will practice creating, editing, printing, and saving documents.  They will create and edit a variety of documents.  They will also learn to format documents to improve appearance.

Introduction to Internet and Email  (Class Home Page)

  • Prerequisite:   Keyboarding, CASAS 210+

In class, learners will learn what the Internet is and how to effectively search the World Wide Web to find information.  They will open a web-based email account, learn a variety of email skills including sending attachments, and they will use email to practice their writing skills.

Introduction to Microsoft Office  (Class Home Page)

  • Prerequisite:  Keyboarding, CASAS 210+, Previous completion of Introduction to Internet or Introduction to Word Processing is preferable

In this class, learners will learn to basics of the Microsoft Office Suite.  They will create documents using basic word processing skills, use the Internet, learn the basics of creating and using spreadsheets, and create and deliver a short presentation using PowerPoint.

Career Search Skills (Class Home Page)

  • Prerequisite:  Keyboarding, CASAS 210+

In this class, learners will learn the basics of word processing and Internet searching within the context of career exploration.  They will create their own resume and cover letter, learn to search for and apply for job openings via the web.  In addition, learners will access and use a variety of interest and aptitude surveys, and career guidance sites to help in their career planning.

Internet Research  (Class Home Page)

  • Prerequisite:  Keyboarding, CASAS 210+, Previous completion of Introduction to Internet is preferable

In this class, learners will learn basics about the Internet and learn how find information for class projects and papers on the Internet. Students will learn how to do advanced searches and use a variety of search tools (including meta-search engines and search directories) to efficiently find research information. They will also learn how to evaluate web sites for accuracy, timeliness, etc.  

Writing Research Papers (Class Home Page)

  • Prerequisite:  Keyboarding, CASAS 210+, Previous completion of Introduction to Word Processing, Internet Research or instructor permission

In this class, learners will learn basic computer skills including some basic and intermediate word processing.  They will learn about the writing process and will write a brief research paper that includes citations.
